Living the dream

Living the dream

I have never felt as blessed as I have in the past year. I was lucky enough to be able to study on the other side of the world; a fact that none of my friends and relatives could have missed since I have hardly talked about anything else during the past year. I always knew that I was lucky to have been born in the Western world, where the fact that I am a woman does not mean that I am treated like a second-class citizen, where I have access to an education that will enable me to be independent and earn my own money.

I have met a lot of wonderful people while living abroad and had a fabulous time. However, it has also made me realize how many people are not in such a fortunate position. Meeting people who had to leave their home countries in order to be able to get a proper education has deeply touched me. It is my birthday in less than two hours and this year I want to do things differently: I have everything I could ever dream of and far more. So what I really want to do this year is help someone else to get control over their own life, just as I have been lucky enough to gain this year.

The birthday gift I am giving myself this year is the one I am most excited about: I am fulfilling an ambition I have had for quite some time now: sending a girl to school. I highly believe in the power of education and in my dreamworld everyone has access to it.

So let me give you the facts:
I am sending a girl to school, which will cost me only 25 euro’s a month. For that minimal amount of money she will be provided with an education. For every extra year a girl spends at school she will earn up to 20% more later on in life. This money she will for 70% spend on her family, which gives her children access to better healthcare. Most importantly however, this will cause her children to be more likely to go to school and spend more years being educated and so the story continues.

I would love to ensure that every child in this world will be able to go to school, that is my big dream. Sadly I am not in a position to make this happen, but the fact that my dream is so big does not mean that it is impossible to realize. There is always some first step you can take and today I am taking mine. Happy Birthday to me.
