The Digital Nomad

The Digital Nomad

It is said that millenials, unlike previous generations, are not that materialistic. They do not care about owning flashy cars, fancy houses and other possessions that would wear them down. What they care about most is creating experiences, being their own boss and being flexible in their geographic location. As more and more people embrace this way of life there is a new group of people rising: the digital nomads. Digital nomads are in a way just your average Joe’s, they work, they meet their friends and live a fairly normal life. The only difference: they live that life wherever they want and are free to choose their geographical location at a moment’s notice.

Digital nomads are those people who have realised that the fact that we are 24/7 connected with the rest of the word wherever we go, can actually be used in their advantage instead of being something that causes them to get burned out or over-stimulated. They found a way to use the internet as a tool and become part of the ‘New Rich’ who are flexible and free like birds. They travel, but whereas travel is usually finite because of the fact that people only spend money instead of earning it, their travels can continue as long as they please because they take their job with them wherever they go. They work as editors, in IT, as coaches and almost every other profession that is around.

Being not bound to a location means you can use your time and money in a more effective way than other people can. If you are not bound to a fixed holiday you can travel during low-season and pay about half of what other people pay. If you can work whenever you want you can avoid rush hours and save even more time. The downfall is that this kind of flexibility can cause some stress to people because it is in stark contrast to the stability that a lot of people long for, however that is the best part of it all. Being a digital nomad does not mean you HAVE to live a life on the road never rooting down. It just means that even if you do choose to settle down you can always pack up and go again, you will never truly be stuck. For a girl with itchy feet this is a soothing thought.
