Want something you have never had?
Do you know the feeling that everything in your life is going ok, but somehow you are still not satisfied? Things go the way they ought to go, yet something is missing, even though you would never be able to tell what that something is exactly? I had that feeling during my first year at university. I did everything I ever wanted to do, I had a fun degree, nice people around me, a steady relationship and loved living on my own. Yet somehow I felt really stuck. All around me people were creating things, travelling to exotic locations and just seemed to live a way more vibrant life. So, I tried to change my life in ways that I thought would help, which, to cut a long story short, did not help at all. The only thing that changed was that I made my life a lot busier, instead of more fun.
Looking back at it today it is very clear to me what went wrong; instead of actually changing things around, I tried to do the same things better, I tried to do more of the same things. Then, a few months later I met someone who would turn my life around. Standing at this random party I told a guy how stuck I felt, how I sometimes envied those people whose life just seemed so easy and exciting. He then looked at me and said something that has stuck with me ever since: “Want something you have never had? Do something you have never done.” I looked at him in amazement, it could not be that simple could it? That little sentence has been a major influence on my life ever since. Whenever I want to change something in my life, instead of looking at what I could do better, I now look at what I could do differently and that is working wonders.
For me, living in Australia has been a life changing experience, but it is not just such big things I am talking about when I say do something different. Anything that pushes you just that little bit out of your comfort zone and puts you into new situations will do. Engaging in new things will change your life in a number of ways. It will help you connect to more and different people, who will bring new opportunities and insights into your life. It will either reinforce your look on things or bring about new perspectives, but in either case it will teach you something about who you are as a person. Most importantly, it will help you break free of your comfort zones. We all have them, which is perfectly natural, however when your comfort zones start holding you back from the life you actually want to be living, it might be time to move out of them.
So if you happen to be at a point in your life where you want to turn things around? Do something you have never done, something fun, something scary or better still: something crazy. Trust me, it will make you feel alive.
